Phyllis Bennis on Afghanistan Armistice? Every news report contains text—whatever new information is being conveyed—and subtext: a lesson it's underscoring, or a pattern it fits. When it's a foreign policy story, as in coverage of current negotiations on ending the war in Afghanistan, the subtext is that the US may naturally, legitimately unleash all the violent, life-shattering power it sees to fit to muster in those countries in which it deems itself interested. |
PART 2: Journalist-prophet-activist CHRIS HEDGES is in fine form in this new speech. With some new examples and new connections he explores the history and the bad effects of the corporate takeover of America. The effects include the degradation of our culture, economy, politics, and freedom--and of the planet's ecosystem. As Hedges sees it, the only sane response is concerted nonviolent resistance |

Brendan interviews Rabbi David Mivasair about recent developments in the campaign by Independent Jewish Voices and other concerned parties to end the tax exempt status for the "Jewish National Fund." The JNF is an Israeli tool for the dispossession of Palestinians. It has been used to erase Palestinian settlements, in one case replacing villages with "Canada Park." Use of occupied land for one ethnicity only contravenes international law, and Canadian domestic law. The JNF has also been implicated in funding Israeli armed forces projects, something which a Canadian charity cannot do. |

Professor Peter Wadhams – The Fate of the Ice Sheet on the Top of the World In early 2019 news about accelerated melting in Arctic and Antarctic made me return to trusted sources. For the Arctic I returned to Prof. Peter Wadhams, the UK’s most experienced sea ice scientist, professor of Ocean Physics, and Head of the Polar Ocean Physics Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. As opposed to the Antarctic, a continent of mountains and valleys covered in ice, the North Pole is an ocean covered with an ice sheet that touched the coast lines of Greenland, Canada, Alaska and Siberia for 100.000 years. In only 30 years the retreat from the coast lines during the Arctic summer accelerated and an ice free Arctic in September may occur in the early 2020. And the Arctic winter is no longer cold enough to restore ice levels. |
